Nichia's Initiatives Toward a Sustainable Society

Mercury and mercury-containing products are increasingly regulated worldwide to prevent health hazards and environmental pollution. Mercury lamps not only pose environmental risks, such as soil and water pollution and challenges in the safe treatment and disposal of mercury waste, but also have several disadvantages when used. These include a significant warm-up time—especially at low temperatures—limited color temperature options, and light flickering.
In Europe, the RoHS compliance banned the manufacture and sales of fluorescent lamps as of February 2023, while ultraviolet (UV) lamps are permitted until February 2027. Nichia is contributing to a sustainable society with its technologies developed over the years, offering LED and LD (Laser Diode) alternatives to mercury lamps for various applications.
