Expanding Possibilities Through Material Reduction – LEDs That Enable Compact and Slim Luminaire Designs
The previous blog post introduced Nichia's first step towards a circular society through the use of recycled materials in LEDs. As the second step of the sustainabLED™ initiative, this blog focuses on material reduction and introduces LEDs that enable the miniaturization and slimming of lighting fixtures.
Why Reducing Material Usage Leads to Lower Environmental Impact
Reducing the amount of materials used in lighting fixtures is not merely a cost-cutting measure—it is a vital initiative for lowering environmental impact throughout the entire product lifecycle, from design and manufacturing to transportation, usage, and disposal. By using less materials, CO2 emissions associated with processing and production can be reduced. Additionally, lighter products improve transportation efficiency. The lightweight design of lighting fixtures contributes not only to reducing installation materials but also to simplifying the installation process itself. If installation becomes easier, it may help solve the growing issue of labor shortages.
These combined effects support the realization of a more sustainable society.
LEDs That Enable Miniaturization and Slimming of Lighting Fixtures
Nichia is developing LED technologies that enable the miniaturization and slimming of lighting fixtures, with the goal of reducing material usage. By optimizing package structures and refining optical designs, Nichia makes it possible to create more compact lighting fixtures.
LEDs That Significantly Contribute to Material Reduction:
- Super High Luminance LED (Part No. NVSW719AC): By emitting high-output light from a small light-emitting area, the central luminous intensity of the lamp is increased. As a result, sufficient light output can be achieved even with a small secondary optical system, directly contributing to material savings in the fixture.
- Ultra-wide Light Distribution LED (Part No. NFSWL11A-D6): The ability to uniformly distribute light over a wide area allows simplification of optical components such as diffusers and reflectors that were previously required, enabling a thinner and more streamlined lamp design.
These products are not only expected to help reduce environmental impact but also to enhance design flexibility for lighting fixtures, thereby opening new possibilities for spatial design.
Summary
Nichia will continue to focus on developing products that are considerate to the global environment. Step by step, Nichia will advance its efforts toward a sustainable future. The next blog post will introduce LEDs that contribute to the realization of a mercury-free society. Look forward to the next update.
